about university

What made your university special? What were the facilities where you studied and the university equipment like?
What comes to mind first when I think of my adoptive university—University of Helsinki—is the deeply collaborative and research-driven environment. The institution has a strong international character, and I immediately felt welcomed by the team. What made it special was the balance between scientific rigor and open, collegial communication. Everyone, from students to senior researchers, was encouraged to contribute ideas.

The facilities were modern and well-equipped. I worked in the Faculty of Medicine, where the histology and imaging labs were particularly impressive. Confocal microscopes, flow cytometers, and other advanced instruments were readily accessible, allowing for high-quality experimental work. The building itself was bright, organized, and fostered a productive atmosphere—ideal for learning and research
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your "adoptive" university? What made it special? What were the premises where you studied and the university facilities like?
I was doing my PhD internship so not applicable
What is student life like at university?
yes, there student associations and yes, the university organizes different activities.
Did you study in English or in the language of the host country? What language requirements does the university have?
Everyone was speaking English.

about the city

What was your impression of the city? How would you describe it? What is interesting to see here?
It was vibrant, peaceful, and beautiful. My favorite place was Game Taste Café, where I met amazing people from different backgrounds. They hosted board game nights, Mafia games, and Kahoot events, which made it a great place to connect and have fun.

about finances

In your experience, how far does the scholarship go? What percentage of your expenses did it cover? What is your opinion on prices in the country in general?
It was challenging because I was considered an exchange student, not a Erasmus Master’s student, so the dormitories were reserved for Master’s students only. As a result, I had to find accommodation off-campus and ended up paying €850 in rent, while my scholarship was only €810
Please advise your classmates on how to save money—Where to shop? What services can be used to save money?
The cafeteria food is quite affordable for Master’s students, who pay only €2.95 per meal. However, for PhD students, the same meal costs around €5.95.
