we share the joy of
discovery
We are Charles Abroad, and our mission is to inspire more of our fellow students at Charles University to study or take up a traineeship abroad. With the support of hundreds of volunteers, we gather key information, share experiences and stories, and do our best to motivate others – because we know that spending time abroad can truly change lives… more about the project

Johanna Mylonaki
Social Media Manager
The Charles Abroad social media channels owe a great deal to Johannka Mylonaki, who has been with us right from the very start. She was part of the very first group of volunteers who helped us get the project off the ground. For over three years now, she has been our fantastic social media administrator. She keeps in touch with students, helps shape our online and offline activities, and no text goes out without her expert eye. Of course, Johannka doesn’t do it all alone – every year she’s joined by dozens of talented students, currently spread across the world through our Instagram TAKE OVER project, where they give a real insight into what studying abroad is like.

Who we are – the story of Charles Abroad
The Charles Abroad project was launched at the end of 2019. Starting a project to support studying abroad at the very beginning of one of the greatest global pandemics the world has ever seen was rather like building a water park in the middle of the Sahara Desert – it seemed like a mad idea. Yet when the worst had passed and the dust had settled, it became clear that in the post-Covid era our project was needed more than ever. We therefore set about systematically working to get Erasmus and other mobility programmes back on their feet and to continue developing them further. We chose a way of communicating that felt most natural for the young people we wanted to reach – social media, online and offline webinars, and an information website to bring it all together.
The project could never have come to life without the selfless effort of many volunteers, who began sharing their experiences and passing on their knowledge, even when they knew the audience was still small and the outcome uncertain. Some of them remain part of our internal team to this day, and we are still in touch with many others. Today, hundreds of talented students collaborate on Charles Abroad, and if there is one thing we are truly proud of, it is their effort, which has undoubtedly fallen on fertile ground. Together they have created more than a thousand mobility reports, dozens of hours of takeovers and videos from abroad, they answer questions, and they spread not only practical advice but also the joy of travelling and discovering new places and interesting people.
The numbers for university programmes today are completely different from four years ago – so many students now want to go abroad that we are running out of places. And that is a good thing! Charles Abroad has become closely intertwined with studying abroad. We accompany students throughout their journey at Charles University – we first meet them as prospective applicants, we see them again after enrolment, and we are there at information sessions during their studies as well as before departure itself. We have tried podcasts, live seminars and webinars. We have built the largest public database of mobility reports available in Czech higher education, and we have inspired other Czech and foreign universities to create similar projects.
Our greatest reward is every student who, thanks to us, begins to consider going abroad, and the greatest joy is each and every one who, perhaps precisely because of our project, actually sets off and gains new experiences and memories.
