about university

What made your university special? What were the facilities where you studied and the university equipment like?
It was an interesting research institute as it worked to advise the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary. While I did not get a detailed insight into the process of writing policy papers, it was very interesting to go to the events organised by the institute which often involved people working in politics. The institute was located in a building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the centre of Budapest, and apart from the location to quality of the building and the equipment was also good.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your "adoptive" university? What made it special? What were the premises where you studied and the university facilities like?
The institute had a number of interns, both research and operational interns. The operational interns had more substantial work than the research interns, which had to work more independently. The research interns did not have detailed insights into the daily work of the institute, which would have been interesting.
The only thing why I would not recommend this institute for an traineeship is because during my stay it became less independent and more closely linked to the Government, which is - in the case of Hungary - a bit problematic.
What is student life like at university?
-
Did you study in English or in the language of the host country? What language requirements does the university have?
Everybody communicated with me in English

about the city

What was your impression of the city? How would you describe it? What is interesting to see here?
I really liked Budapest as there is a lot to do. Some of my favourite places were the riverside, the spa, the multiple parks and rooftop bars. In combination with the good weather I experienced this was really nice. It is also situated well in the centre/east of Europe, which meant I was able to make some trips to neighbouring countries.

about finances

In your experience, how far does the scholarship go? What percentage of your expenses did it cover? What is your opinion on prices in the country in general?
Hungary is dealing with high inflation rates, which meant prices are not what they used to be. However, it is still a bit cheaper than other countries and I could almost get by with the scholarship.
Please advise your classmates on how to save money—Where to shop? What services can be used to save money?

about accommodation

What type of accommodation did you choose? Would you recommend it to others? If not, what type of accommodation do you think is best based on your experience (dormitory, private apartment, private dormitory, shared room, etc.)?
I shared an apartment with two other internationals in the area between the city centre and my institute. I got it via Spotahome, which meant it was secure. Overall, it was a good experience.

about experiences

Did you use Erasmus stay to travel around your country/Europe? What are your best travel experiences? What would you not recommend?
Language and culture: what cultural differences did you notice? How did you cope with the national language? Was it also the language of your studies? Do you feel that your language skills improved during your stay?

final rating

Why here? What makes this location special? Why would you send your friends to your country/city?
Budapest is a very cool city, there are many students and a nice going out scene.
