about university

What made your university special? What were the facilities where you studied and the university equipment like?
The University of Caen is a well-established university in France. The city is quite and lovely, The Catalysis and Spectrochemistry Laboratory (LCS) located in this university is renowned for its research into porous materials, with strong skills in the design and preparation of microporous materials, such as zeolites, and the study of porous materials by operando spectroscopy, i.e. the observation of the material as close as possible to its operating conditions. Thanks to these complementary skills, the LCS occupies a unique position in the study and optimization of catalytic or adsorption processes, with multiple applications in the fields of materials for energy conversion or pollution control.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your "adoptive" university? What made it special? What were the premises where you studied and the university facilities like?
I worked as an phd student over there. I mainly focused on my own PhD project using their advanced AGIR spectrometers in the lab
What is student life like at university?
The university is very nice with great dormitories and a canteen. Both of them have good qualities and cheap prices, which is beneficial for students.
Did you study in English or in the language of the host country? What language requirements does the university have?
English. They don't have language requirements

about the city

What was your impression of the city? How would you describe it? What is interesting to see here?
The city is calm, student-oriented. I love the Sunday market best!

about finances

In your experience, how far does the scholarship go? What percentage of your expenses did it cover? What is your opinion on prices in the country in general?
The scholarship covered the rent, but the living fee and transport can't be covered by the scholarship. The price of France is in average 2/3 more expensive than Prague.
Please advise your classmates on how to save money—Where to shop? What services can be used to save money?
Compare the prices of the stuff from different shops; keep an eye on the discounts

about accommodation

What type of accommodation did you choose? Would you recommend it to others? If not, what type of accommodation do you think is best based on your experience (dormitory, private apartment, private dormitory, shared room, etc.)?
The commercial student apartment. Nice for a short stay in the city

about experiences

Did you use Erasmus stay to travel around your country/Europe? What are your best travel experiences? What would you not recommend?
No
Language and culture: what cultural differences did you notice? How did you cope with the national language? Was it also the language of your studies? Do you feel that your language skills improved during your stay?
French people really likes to speak French! But since the lab is quite international, there's no problem if you can't speak French.

final rating

Why here? What makes this location special? Why would you send your friends to your country/city?
This institution is an advanced and world-leading laboratory in the field of zeolites, spectroscopy, and catalysis. I highly recommend this institution to all my colleagues and students who are interested in the field.
