about university
What made your university special? What were the facilities where you studied and the university equipment like?
All faculties, research centers, the Sprachzentrum, libraries, and other facilities are conveniently located on campus, with excellent bus connections to the city center. Everything you need is within walking distance, including cafes, supermarkets, a gym, and more, which allows you to spend an entire day productively without having to leave the campus.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your "adoptive" university? What made it special? What were the premises where you studied and the university facilities like?
Everything is a bit more organized and efficient, with the staff maintaining a friendly and helpful attitude. However, the power distance between students and professors tends to be more hierarchical and traditional.
What is student life like at university?
There are many active student societies and a variety of language courses, including German, offered at the Sprachzentrum. The university organizes numerous events for students, such as festivals, film screenings, job fairs, and more.
Did you study in English or in the language of the host country? What language requirements does the university have?
I communicated with locals in German, which helped me immerse myself in the local culture and improve my language skills. At the university, I mostly spoke English with students and professors.

about the city
What was your impression of the city? How would you describe it? What is interesting to see here?
Saarbrücken is a lively and diverse student town with lots of things to do. From cultural events and local festivals to outdoor activities, there’s something for everyone. Its location is ideal for travel, making it easy to visit nearby places like Luxembourg, Metz, Strasbourg, Paris, Heidelberg, and Trier.
about finances
In your experience, how far does the scholarship go? What percentage of your expenses did it cover? What is your opinion on prices in the country in general?
With the scholarship covering basic living expenses, you can manage comfortably. Although rent in Saarbrücken is relatively affordable compared to other German cities, dining out can be quite expensive.
Please advise your classmates on how to save money—Where to shop? What services can be used to save money?
When you officially enroll as a student, you’ll get a card that allows you to have lunch at the Menza and provides unlimited access to public transportation, including bus rides to Luxembourg.

about accommodation
What type of accommodation did you choose? Would you recommend it to others? If not, what type of accommodation do you think is best based on your experience (dormitory, private apartment, private dormitory, shared room, etc.)?
I stayed at the university guesthouse on Kaiserslauterer Street. It has all the essentials and is in an excellent location. University accommodation is affordable and can save you time, as finding a room in a WG (shared apartment) can be quite difficult in Germany.
about experiences
Did you use Erasmus stay to travel around your country/Europe? What are your best travel experiences? What would you not recommend?
I highly recommend travelling to Luxembourg, Metz, Strasbourg, and Paris. These destinations are just one or two hours away, making them perfect for day trips. However, if you’ve never been to Paris, I suggest prioritizing it and spending at least three days there.
Language and culture: what cultural differences did you notice? How did you cope with the national language? Was it also the language of your studies? Do you feel that your language skills improved during your stay?
Local people tend to be very reserved, which can make it difficult to socialize outside the university. They place a high value on order, discipline, and work. The city is peaceful during the week but becomes lively on weekends. German was not the language of my studies, but my proficiency was sufficient for communication. Overall, I didn't see a significant improvement, but it was helpful for practising my speaking skills.
final rating
Why here? What makes this location special? Why would you send your friends to your country/city?
The location is ideal, offering easy access to many amazing destinations at a low cost. The university campus is beautiful and well-equipped with everything you need.
live-saving tips
If I went again, I would definitely remember to pack...
winter clothes even in spring.
Before leaving, I would like to know that...
some places only accept cash.
What surprised me most was that...
the city is quite diverse.
The hardest thing for me was...
the lack of close friends.
