o univerzitě
Čím byla tvá univerzita výjimečná? Jak vypadaly prostory ve kterých jsi studoval(a) a univerzitní vybavení?
Heidelberg is a university city with a long and rich history, with an old town that is well-preserved and where university buildings and student facilities are around each corner. For me being a philosophy student, the uniqueness is in all the famous minds who lived and worked there before.
To study, I mostly used the Main Library, but also the library of the Philosophical Seminar as well as rooms for PhD students in the University Clinic where my supervisor actually had his department. Yet also one of the many Mensa’s (Student Restaurants / Cafeterias) can be used for this purpose, if you like some ambiance. And many Seminars have their own library. The general equipment was ok, but I didn’t need much. In the Clinic it was best to use my own internet via hotspot though.
Co tě první napadne, když pomyslíš na svou "adoptivní" univerzitu. Čím byla výjimečná? Jak vypadaly prostory ve kterých jsi studoval(a) a univerzitní vybavení?
For me there was little difference, which has to do with the fact my study program at Charles University (German and French Philosophy) is relatively organised in the German manner, and I already was familiar with the German system from a previous Erasmus. Bear in mind, however, that the academic year starts later in Germany: for example in March there are no courses (Vorlesungsfreiezeit) as the summer semester only starts in April, going on until August.
Jak vypadá studentský život na univerzitě?
The answer to all these questions is ‚yes‘. You can get more info at the Welcome Center or the Studentenwerk, but also online there are several resources, just Google a bit.
Studoval(a) jsi v angličtině, nebo v jazyce hostitelské země? Jaké požadavky jsou v oblasti jazyka kladeny univerzitou?
For me it was a big advantage that I am fluent in German. However, I think most of the university officials can also communicate in English, and there are many internationals around. But to find your way around, I think some basic German would come in handy, as not all German people (especially older ones) have a command of English. I think language requirements from the university differ from department to department, for example some PhD students fully enrolled at Heidelberg need to have or obtain a Latin degree (which was not the case for me as a visitor).

o městě
Jak na tebe město působilo? Jak byste jej charakterizoval/a? Co je zde zajímavého k vidění?
Heidelberg is not huge and not small, not super busy nor very calm, its centre being the Old Town (Altstadt) next to the Neckar river, where many important university facilities are housed. You can find a nice mix there of students and tourists. Most of the suburbs are not interesting, but also not relevant for a student, apart maybe to live, as it is cheaper. In the (immediate) surrounds, there are plenty of options to go for a walk / hike in nature, such as the Philosophenweg at the other side of the Neckar. Also, the city of Mannheim is just ‚next door‘. But I especially recommend smaller towns next to Heidelberg, such as Weinheim, and if you want to take a train, cities like Mainz and Tübingen are nice to visit. Personally, I liked to chill in the garden of the Zeughaus Mensa, and there are other nice ‚hidden‘ gardens in the centre as well.
o financích
Jak lze podle Tvojí zkušenosti vyjít se stipendiem? Kolik procent výdajů Vám pokrylo? Jaký je Váš názor na ceny v zemi obecně?
For me the scholarship was definitely enough to cover my costs. Within Germany, Heidelberg is more expensive than the average, yet not more expensive than Berlin or Munich. Compared to Brussels, it was less, and to Prague, it was more expensive. Housing will be the biggest cost and challenge, so start looking in advance.
Poraď prosím spolužákům, jak ušetřit - Kde nakupovat? Jaké služby lze v rámci úspory financí využívat?
I think the Mensa offers great value for money to eat, although cooking is still cheaper. All major supermarkets have ‚house brands‘ with really cheap products, although you might need to go outside of the city centre to find them (Rewe, Edeka, Penny, Aldi, Lidl…). It might be beneficial to get a Deutschland Ticket for public transport; now in 2026 this was about €60 for a month for ALL public transport in Germany except high speed and intercity trains. But this ticket is always a subscription, so be sure to cancel it in advance when you will no longer need it.

o ubytování
Jaké ubytování sis zvolil(a)? Doporučil(a) bys jej ostatním? A pokud ne, jaká varianta ubytování je podle Tvých zkušeností nejlepší (kolej, ubytování v soukromém bytě, soukromá kolej, sdílený pokoj a podobně...)?
I lived in a ‚WG‘ (= the typical German student Wohngemeinschaft or house-sharing) found on Airbnb, a big house with three people me included for about €800 a month (and I was there only for a month), which was in Schriesheim north of Heidelberg but easy to reach by tram 5. You can also look on websites such as WG Gesucht or Wunderflat, or maybe in Facebook groups. I’m not sure in how far the university itself has housing to offer, but know that finding a room in Heidelberg is challenging. My advice is to look outside of the city centre, since public transport is good an relatively cheap, and even living in Mannheim next to the rail station would be a realistic option.
o zážitcích
Využil(a) jsi Erasmu k cestování po tvé zemi/Evropě? Jaké jsou tvoje nejlepší cestovatelské zážitky? Co naopak nedoporučuješ?
As mentioned before, the Deutschland Ticket is the way to go, at least when the price stays around €60/month. From Heidelberg, you can visit many many historical cities in Germany by train for a day. I would recommend Speyer and Tübingen, but not Frankfurt or Ludwigshafen. If you’d like to spend a weekend away, check out Konstanz am Bodensee with its magnificent lake shared with Switzerland and Austria.
Jazyk a kultura: jakých kulturních odlišností jste si všiml/a? Jak jste se vypořádával/a s národním jazykem? Byl to i jazyk vašeho studia? Máte pocit, že jste se v jazyce díky pobytu posunul/a?
As I was familiar with Germany and the German language before, to me there were no specific difficulties or culture shocks. It seems the university also has several courses and events in English, but I’m not sure if studying here for a longer time with zero command of German is beneficial. Be sure to check the course program in advance.
závěrečné hodnocení
Proč právě sem? V čem je lokalita výjimečná? Proč bys své kamarády do své země/ města poslal/a ty?
In Heidelberg you become part of a very long intellectual tradition. But ask yourself first: does the university offer what I am looking for? For me, in the field of philosophy this was a big yes, but maybe in other fields, other places are better. In any case, my time here was lovely.
live-saving tips
Kdybych jel(a) znovu, určitě bych si nezapomněl(a) zabalit..
… a hair dryer :D.
Před odjezdem bych býval(a) rád(a) věděl(a), že...
… the academic year starts and ends later.
Nejvíc mě překvapilo, že...
… there are castle ruins everywhere.

Nejtěžší pro mě bylo....
… not being dressed too warm or too cold.
