The Roma Environmental Sustainability and Development Initiative (RESDI) invites students from selected European institutions to participate in a pilot competition focused on addressing energy poverty, environmental challenges, and the inclusive green transition in Luník IX (Košice, Slovakia), the largest urban Roma settlement in Central Europe.

The competition offers a unique opportunity to develop practical, low-cost, and socially impactful solutions in a real-world context. We are looking for innovative ideas and motivated students who want to contribute to positive change. If you have an idea for tackling energy poverty, promoting sustainable development, or improving the quality of life in marginalized communities but are unsure how to turn it into a viable project, we are here to help.

Selected finalists will receive:

• expert mentoring from professionals in sustainability, energy, social innovation, and project development
• financial support of 500 EUR
• support in further developing their proposals
• assistance with grant applications, fundraising, partnership building, and future implementation opportunities

The competition is open to students of all academic levels, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students. There are no age restrictions, we welcome all currently enrolled students interested in sustainability, innovation, and creating positive environmental and social impact.

Participants are invited to explore one or more of the following thematic areas:

1. Marginalised Communities in the Green Transition and Addressing Energy Poverty

Solutions should consider the specific needs of vulnerable groups, with a particular focus on improving access to affordable and sustainable energy, increasing energy efficiency, and promoting inclusive approaches to the green transition.

2. Development of the Local Social Economy

Proposals should explore ways to strengthen local economic activities, support community-based initiatives, and create opportunities for employment and income generation within the community. In particular, proposals are expected to build on and further develop the existing social enterprise established in Luník IX, ensuring continuity, sustainability, and practical applicability within the local context.

3. Education, Awareness-Raising, and Capacity Building

Ideas may focus on improving access to information, strengthening environmental awareness, and developing skills that empower individuals and communities to actively engage in sustainable practices.

4. Waste Management and Related Solutions

Participants are encouraged to propose practical approaches to waste reduction, recycling, and the overall improvement of local waste management systems, taking into account the specific context and needs of Luník IX.

The competition will consist of two phases:

• First phase: Students submit an initial concept of their proposed solution based on the challenges and context of Luník IX.
• Second phase: Selected finalists receive mentoring and support in further developing their proposals into more detailed solutions, which will then be evaluated by an expert committee.

The winning proposal will have the opportunity to continue its development with RESDI’s support, including assistance with grant applications and exploring possibilities for practical implementation.
